8. DONALD GETS INTO TROUBLE
In the week, Donald could only manage to go to the vet’s in the evenings—and how he looked forward to the time after tea when he could slip off to the kennels and see to the dogs. They welcomed him with barks that could surely be heard half a mile away!
But poor Donald had a shock when Wednesday arrived, and the essays of the weekend came up for correction. He had handed in his smudgy, hastily written one, ashamed of it, but not having had enough time to do it again.
Mr. Fairly his form master had the piles of essays in front of him, and dealt with the good ones first, awarding marks. Then he looked sternly at Donald, and waved an exercise book at him—Donald’s own book!
“This essay must be written all over again!” he said. “In fact, I’m almost inclined to say it should be written out three times. The spelling! The handwriting! The smudges! Donald, you should be in the lowest form, not this one! I am really ashamed to have a boy like you in my class.”
“I’m sorry, sir. I—well—I had rather a lot to do in the weekend,” said poor Donald.
“Ha yes—taking out dogs for a walk on the hills, I suppose!” said Mr. Fairly. “Well, I shall ask your parents if they will please see that your homework is done—and done well—before you go racing off with the most peculiar collection of dogs that I have ever seen!”
“Oh please, sir, don’t complain to my parents!” said Donald. “I’ll rewrite the essay, sir. I’ll—I’ll write it out three times if you like!”
“Very well. Rewrite your essay three times tonight, and hand it in tomorrow,” said Mr. Fairly. “I fear, Donald, that that will mean five dogs will have to do without your company after tea!”
“The mean fellow!” thought Donald, angrily. “He must know I am taking the vet’s dogs walking after tea—and that’s about the worst punishment he could give me—making me sit indoors, writing essays, when he knows I love walking the dogs!”
But there was nothing to be done about it—Donald had to tell the vet he wouldn’t be up after tea that day.
“Bad luck,” said the vet, kindly. “The dogs will miss you. Never mind. Just come when you can. I’ll manage.”
Donald sat down after tea to rewrite his essay. Blow, bother, blow! What a waste of a lovely evening! Would the dogs miss him? Would they be looking out for him? What a pity he couldn’t write about them, instead of rewriting his stupid essay!
His mother was astonished to find him in his bedroom, writing so busily. “I thought you would be up at the vet’s,” she said. “Are you doing extra homework, or something?”
“Well—sort of,” said Donald. His mother looked closely at what he was doing, and frowned.
“Oh Donald! You’re rewriting an essay! And no wonder! what a mess you made of it—however could you give in work like that? I suppose you wrote it in a hurry because you give up so much time to helping the vet.
